Obesity and the rise of teens being overweight has reached epidemic statistics over the last decade.  This particular webpage is an introduction to what is a major concern for teens and youth in our county.  Hopefully, students, parents, and community members will find information which will help in the process of helping students in need of help along with tools to prevent or slow the further increases in the number of our teen aged population.

Managing Your Body Weight and Body Composition

We have been talking about exercising and how important it is to balance the daily amount of calories you consume and the amount of calories you burn.  So, what is a calorie?  Calories are units used to measure energy.  In keeping a balance between consumed and burned, you can maintain you present weight.  It is also good to understand what you have to do to lose one pound of body fat.  To lose one pound of body fat you will need to lower the number of calories consumed or used by the body.  The approximate number is 3500 calories.  That means if you cut back your caloric intake or burned an additional 500 calories a day you would lose one pound by the end of the week.  It is suggested that a person shouldn't lose more than a two pounds a week.

How do you see your body?  The way you see your body is called your body image.  The media, friends, family, and culture sometimes influence your body image.  What does this have to do with anything?  Sometimes, external influences can be harmful to your body image.

Body Composition

  • Overweight - a condition in which your body weighs more than the recommended weight for your height
  • Underweight - a condition in which your body weighs less than the recommended weight for your height
  • Obesity - a condition in which a person has an excessive amount of fat
