Character... Who Are You?

What makes you... you?  As a teen, that may be a question that you ask yourself.  It is a combination of many factors that influence your behaviors, opinions, and feelings.  This could be summarized as simply character.  Character, by definition are those distinctive qualities that describe how a person thinks, feels, and behaves.

Types of Character

People are basically considered to have one of two types of character.  Those that have good character qualities and those viewed as lacking good character qualities.  The important thing to remember as a teen is that your character metaphorically opens and closes doors to opportunities you may come across.  So what are some things that people look for when they look for someone of good character?  Good character is based on a persons's perceived honesty or integrity, respect, and willingness to take on responsibility.

Developing Your Own Character

Teenagers begin developing their character and values at a very young age.  It is during these years that you and outside influences challenge some of your beliefs and values.  This is a critical phase in your life because many teenagers are looking to find themselves.  Something you can do to help develop and solidify your character is to find role models who demonstrate good character traits.

Positive Role Models

Most people generally will find someone to look up to as a role model.  The important thing is to really look at whom you have chosen as a role model.  Are they really making a positive influence in your life?  Are they reinforcing good character traits for you to follow?  A role model is someone whose success or behavior serves as an example for others.  Make sure that your role model is living up to that expectation.  If not, they can always still be friends.  But remember that the choices you make are yours.

Demonstrating Good Character

Demonstrating good character is a decision that we must make.  Teens often times will demonstrate good character traits at school but not at home or vice versa.  Your positive character will have a positive effect on you, your family, community, and in school.
